How to choose a moisturizer for your skin

Texture, weather and how your skin feels by midday tell you more than any label.

Moisturizer is the step most people keep, even on lazy days. Choosing the right one is less about trends and more about paying attention to your skin.

Start with how your skin feels

If your skin feels tight or flaky a few hours after cleansing, it is asking for a richer texture. If it looks shiny by midday, a lighter gel or lotion may feel more comfortable.

Think about texture

  • Gels feel light and cooling and suit warm weather or oilier skin.
  • Lotions sit in the middle and work for many skin types.
  • Creams feel richer and are often more comfortable for dry skin and cold weather.

Let the weather guide you

Many people use a lighter texture in summer and switch to a richer cream in winter, when cold air and indoor heating leave skin feeling drier.

Your skin changes with the seasons. Your moisturizer can too.

Look for comforting ingredients

Ceramides are commonly used in moisturizers made for dry skin, and hyaluronic acid is often used for hydration. Read the full ingredient list on the retailer or brand page before you buy, especially if your skin is sensitive.

Worth considering: Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream for a richer feel, or layer COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence under a lighter moisturizer. For an evening extra, try Laneige Water Sleeping Mask.

Patch test new products

Try a new moisturizer on a small area first. If you experience ongoing irritation, stop using it and speak to a dermatologist or pharmacist.
